So spricht John Cage in einem Interview über die bildenden Künste bezüglich seiner Erwartungen gegenüber Film, Musik und Dichtung. Der Verzicht auf Absicht bedeutet Verzicht auf Erwartung, Verzicht auf Spekulation, Verzicht auf Ergebnis, gar Verzicht auf Inhalt? Was ist also diese Stille? Oft kommt die Frage auf, ob überhaupt möglich sei, als Mensch nichts zu denken, völlige Leere zu empfinden, 'Stille' zu sein. Der Buddhismus lehrt in seiner spirituellen Praxis der Meditation diesen Zustand als bewusstseinserweiternde Übung. Zu beachten ist hierbei dass das lateinische Wort 'meditatio' neben 'zur Mitte ausrichten' auch mit 'das Nachdenken über etwas' übersetzt werden kann. Jedoch soll gerade durch die Meditation jenes Enden des alltäglichen bewussten Denkens erreicht werden. Gibt es demnach also zweierlei Auffassungen des Wortes 'Nachdenken'? Zum einen das bewusste Nachdenken über von sich selbst aus betrachtete Dinge, Geschehnisse, Emotionen und dem gegenüber das Nachdenken zur Mitte gerichtet, ins tiefste Innerste hinein, vielleicht vorbewusst oder gar unbewusst? Demnach besäße der Verzicht auf Absichten in der Stille dennoch einen Inhalt, einen sogar bedeutenden Inhalt, den der eigenen Mitte, über das Wesen der Dinge, was auch immer das bedeuten mag.
